The best-known legend of Langkawi is the story of Mahsuri from the 18th century. Mahsuri was a beautiful woman who married the love of her life. Her husband went off to fight against the Siamese army. During this time Mahsuri’s Mother in-law, who was jealous of her beauty, accused her of adultery. As punishment she was left tied to a tree in the scorching sun for days – she pleaded her innocence but nobody believed her. She was then sentenced to death, white blood flowed from her stab wounds signifying her innocence. With her dying breath, she cursed Langkawi with seven generations of bad luck. Mahsuri’s tomb is now a popular tourist attraction.
